World Press Freedom Day

Amrit Indo Canadian Academy marked World Press Freedom Day with a powerful and engaging event titled “Voices of Truth: Youth Media Dialogue,” aimed at promoting awareness, ethical journalism, and media literacy among students. The day-long event featured a range of thought-provoking activities that encouraged active participation and critical thinking. The highlight was a Poster & Article Writing Competition, where students tackled topics such as “Journalism Without Fear or Favour,” “Fake News vs Free News,” and “My Idea of a Free Press.” Young minds showcased their creativity and insight, addressing the vital role of press freedom in today’s world. Ms. Ruchi Bawa - member of Women and Child Welfare Government Committee, also running an NGO " AAS EHSAAS" announced the competition results, applauding the participants for their thoughtfulness and expression. A lively Student Panel Discussion followed, centered on the theme “Why Press Freedom Matters to the Youth of Today.” Students and volunteers shared personal views, citing the importance of transparency, access to information, and responsible media consumption in a digital age. An optional but highly engaging Interactive Session with a senior journalist Ashwani Jaitley and Sukhdev Singh Salempuri allowed students to ask questions about the realities of working in media, the ethics of reporting, and how journalism shapes society. This session proved particularly insightful for those interested in a future career in journalism. The event concluded with an Award Ceremony, recognizing participants and volunteers for their dedication, and honoring the esteemed guests for their valuable contributions. In a moving finale, attendees joined in a Pledge Ceremony, vowing: “We Pledge to Stand for Truth, Ethics, and Freedom of Expression.” Through this initiative, Amrit Indo Canadian Academy successfully empowered youth voices and celebrated the essence of a free and fair press, aligning with the global spirit of World Press Freedom Day.
